Supreme beauty that is bold and unafraid - that is what art should be. And no one does it better than Evoke Contemporary Gallery on Guadalupe St. in Santa Fe, NM. In 2011 John O’Hern curated a show called Decadence that haunts to this day. I still have the promotional materials, coffee stained and dog eared. I pull it out once in a while to remind myself why I believe in art so passionately.
Works like The Superlative Muse by Pamela Wilson, who still shows her amazing work there, capture stories that will be with you …well maybe forever. Scott Goodwillie’s Nikki’s Demons left me fascinated and a little afraid of my own demons, and Charles Pfahl’s Terror could have given me nightmares if I’d looked at it too long.
Now don’t get me wrong. It’s not all dark and troubling. It’s some of the most beautiful art I’ve seen. The painting shown here, by a new artist for them named Soey Milk, is a great example. It’s simply the more disturbing pieces that have remained embedded in me for all of these years.
Pamela Wilson still shows with them today. Her painting My Ruined Soliloquy plainly speaks to imminent tragedy but with a sense of strange peace. Lee Price and Jorge Santos are also still showing there. Julyan Davis creates works like You Did Not Prove To Me So Kind, a nude woman crawling through the snow with an ax. There are ruined things and burning things.
Excellent standards of technique and execution are clearly very important at this gallery. Each artist brings not only talent but expertise to their works. In a city like Santa Fe, where incredible art is around every corner, it is difficult to be a cut above. But Evoke Contemporary provides a level of quality that will stand up to any gallery in the area.
The website is well designed and easy to navigate. I strongly suggest a visit.
If you appreciate work that touches our dark inner spaces in a beautiful way. If you like work that challenges your mind and pleases your eye with perfect technique, don’t miss Evoke.
